In March, PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh had also said that a probe would be launched into the “delay” in installation of CCTV cameras in eight Assembly constituencies where BJP MLAs had won the elections when AAP came to power in 2020.

The Public Works Department (PWD) in Delhi, as part of an internal survey, has found that of the around 2.8 lakh CCTV cameras installed across the Capital, 9,767 either do not work, are damaged or have been stolen.

Officials said the department has now been instructed to address the issue in a time-bound manner.

A senior official said the internal survey was conducted recently following directions from higher authorities.

CCTV cameras to catch and fine road rule breakers

New CCTV cameras are set to be installed across Salford in a bid to catch and fine drivers for breaking rules such as taking banned turns, the council has said.

The cameras will be installed at “hot spots” across the city, with the aim of catching motorists who block yellow-box junctions or drive in designated cycling zones.

The move was discussed at a meeting at Saford Civic Centre on Monday, with the council agreeing to award a contract for the supply and maintenance of the new CCTV cameras over the next five years.

Mike McCusker, the council’s lead member for transport, said: “Some people just think this is a cash cow, but it’s not, it’s about improving the flow of traffic.”

Thousands sign up doorbell cameras to solve crimes

More than 4,000 households and businesses have registered their doorbell or CCTV cameras to help assist in police investigations.

Cumbria Police said when a crime takes place, it has a system in place to see if nearby footage has captured vital evidence.

However, the force stressed that signing up did not not mean officers had remote access to cameras and information would “only be used to request footage if an incident were to occur”.

Officers are urging more people to sign up and help “significantly increase the speed of an investigation, as well as the likelihood of the offender being caught or vulnerable person safeguarded”.

32,000 Faulty Cameras, 15,000 Missing: Delhi's CCTV Network Under Scrutiny

The CCTV project was initially hailed as a major public safety.

The Delhi government is set to launch a comprehensive technical audit of the city’s vast CCTV surveillance network amid growing concerns over faulty implementation and equipment failures in a flagship project initiated by the previous administration, government sources said on Friday.

According to internal assessments, over 32,000 of the 2.64 lakh CCTV cameras installed across Delhi’s 70 assembly constituencies have been found to be non-functional. In addition, more than 15,000 cameras that were part of the sanctioned count were never installed in the first place.

Sources said discrepancies have also been flagged in several constituencies where the actual number of installed cameras falls significantly short of the approved allocation.

In light of these findings, the current government has decided to conduct a full-scale technical audit of the project. The audit is expected to cover installation records, equipment functionality, vendor compliance, and data storage mechanisms, with the aim of identifying lapses and fixing accountability.
